Abstract
Briquette is a solid fuel from biomass that can be used as an alternative source of energy through the compression process to obtain its ideal form. Raw materials which commonly used to produce briquettes are twigs, leaves, sawdust, and another kind of waste such as agricultural waste. Briquettes don’t use charcoal as the ingredients since it needs more energy for the combustion process. Commonly, briquettes were produced from sawdust. The sawdust that can be used to produce briquettes is mahogany’s sawdust with bottom ash as the additional material and polyvinyl acetate as the adhesive material. The problem that arises is there are only a few research which using polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) as the adhesive material. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the quality of the briquettes produced from the mixture of mahogany’s sawdust and bottom ash, also polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) as the adhesive material. The result showed that briquettes consisted of mahogany’s sawdust with bottom ash and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) as adhesive still fulfill the wood charcoal briquette and coal briquettes standard in Indonesian standard (SNI) measured by its density, compressive strength, heating value, water level, and ash level according to SNI 1-6235-2000 and SNI No. 4931/2010 on composition of materials and adhesives. The best composition obtained from the mixture is represented by the ratio 95% (95 gr) of mahogany’s sawdust and 5% (5 gr) polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive generating characteristics which closely fulfill the SNI value of charcoal briquettes and coal briquettes. Briquettes with this treatment are having the density value 0,61g / cm3, compressive strength 9,42kg / cm2, the calorific value close to the SNI which amounted 5168 cal/g, water level 16.81% and ash level 6%.
