ABSTRACT

This research was conducted to determine of activated natural zeolite catalysts effect in the esterification reaction to the reduce of free fatty acids on wasted cooking oil, the concentration of methanol in the transesterification reaction to the yield and the best treatment based on biodiesel character tests. This research uses a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors of activated natural zeolite catalysts (A): (4, 8, 12 g) and methanol concentration (B): (40, 50%). The biodiesel characters are analyzed include : yield, density, viscosity, acid number, free fatty acids and water content. The results showed that the use of activated natural zeolite catalysts in the esterification reaction significant effect towards reduced levels of free fatty acids. Free fatty acid content of the raw materials derived from waste cooking oil capable of 11.79% to below 2%. The concentration of methanol in the transesterification reaction significant effect to the yield of biodiesel produced. Highest yield achieved was 92.27%. The best treatment is obtained by the use of activated natural zeolite catalysts as much as 12 grams in the esterification reaction and methanol concentration of 50% in the transesterification reaction. Character of biodiesel best treatment include: yield 92.27%; density of 0.862 g/ml; kinematic viscosity of 2.71 cSt; acid number 0.32 mg KOH/g of oil; free fatty acid levels 0.73% and 0.045% water content.
