ABSTRACT

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel that is processed from vegetable oils and animal oils. Use of used cooking oil as a raw material can reduce the price of biodiesel production. High FFA levels on used cooking oil requires esterification reaction with H2SO4 catalyst and the transesterification reaction with a heterogeneous catalyst banana stem ash. Analysis in this study used a Completely Randomized Design with 2 factors are variations in the concentration of catalyst is composed of 3%, 7% and 11% w/v methanol and reaction time of 30, 45, and 60 minutes. The yield of biodiesel is the best in this study was 83% resulting from the transesterification reaction catalyst banana stem ash as much as 3% for 30 minutes. The resulting biodiesel has the characteristics which have largely been in accordance with SNI 04-7182-2006 include density of 0.85 g/cm3, 9.133 cSt viscosity, 177.5 °C flash point, 10.5 °C cloud point, -3 °C pour point and a water content of 0.015%.
